For the whole family, especially for fishing! Costa Rica is by far the most popular fishing destination in Central America. On the west coast the main attraction is the bill fishing which is excellent all year with the possible exception of October and November. From December through April the sailfishing is best in the southern half including Quepos, adjacent to the Manuel Antonio National Park, Drakes Bay and Golfito. Further north in Guanacaste at Carillo ( also called Guanamar, after the resort located there ) and Tamarindo, starting around February the blue marlin fishing heats up.
By late April the main body of sailfish moves northward with the best action in the Tamarindo / Flamingo area, and remains there for the rest of the season.

Giant yellowfin tuna start to show up throughout the west coast sometime in April and remain available into the summer months. Inshore species such as roosterfish, snapper, mackerel, jacks and amberjack are also available throughout the year.

Most of the "fishing lodges" are located in the far southern part of the country at Golfito / Puerto Jiminez. All inclusive packages are offered at these lodges that start when you get off the plane in San Jose and end when you are brought back to the airport for your flight home.

On the rest of the Pacific coast the accommodatiuons are in small family owned hotels, and the fishing is done on charter boats that mainly range from 25' to 33', although every year brings larger ones to the country. Complete packages can be arranged that include all the fishing, accommodations and transfers, as well as any side touristy type tours.
The exception would be at Los Sueños, the mega resort located just north of Jaco Beach. American style condominiums, golf course and a brand new modern marina almost make the visitor feel like he never left the states - almost, because the surroundings and fishing are pure Costa Rica.

The Caribbean coast is renowned for it's tarpon and snook fishing the action is concentrated in the jungle rivers and just outside their mouths. The three main areas are Parismina, Tortuguero and Rio Colorado, which is the largest river system. Tarpon are available throughout the year with the best from March into October, and the best time for snook from October into January.

There is another, less well known but productive, tarpon and snook fishery located in the interior of the country on the Nicauraguan border, and across that border. This area is accessed by road from San Jose, and is a relatively inexpensive alternative to the Caribbean fishing lodges
